First Grey Horse to Win the Grand National

The Lamb was the first grey horse to win the Aintree Grand National.
He was actually a full horse - a stallion (I suppose it made him jump a bit higher) and stood little higher than 15 hands in height.

Anglo

Anglo ridden by Tim Norman and trained by Fred Winter was the winner of the 1966 Grand National

Anglo had been sent to Fred Winter in 1965 when Captain Ryan Price's trainers licence was withdrawn. He had won a sequence of novice chases for the Captain during the 1964-65 season.

In the early part of the 1965-66 season whilst with Fred Winter Anglo was placed three times before running badly at Ascot on December 16. Fred decided to run him again the following day at Windsor over three miles and Anglo won comfortably.

Anglo started at 50/1 in the 1966 Grand National and after being given a trouble free race, hunting round on the inner and being sent on two from home, came home the winner by 20 lengths from Freddie.

Anglo only ever won one more race, a 3 mile 5 furlong chase at Worcester in March 1967 but in the National (of the same year) trailed behind and was pulled up after a circuit.

The horse became known as a bit of a "dog" and was only placed in a race once more at Lingfield Park in 1968. Soon after this race Anglo began to lose weight rapidly and as a result it was eventually decided to have him put down. A post-mortem carried out on Anglo showed that the horse had been living with a ruptured heart.

Sadly horses cannot tell you what is wrong with them or what may be hurting them.

why no british open in 1871

There was no British Open in 1871 due to the fact that in 1870 Tom Morris Jr. had won the Championship belt for the third time and so it became his permanent property and as a result there was no trophy to be awarded for the following year.

The Championship was revived in 1872 when the Prestwick Golf Club, Royal & Ancient Club and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers together bought a Silver Claret Jug and along with a Gold Medal awarded these to the winner of the Open Championship. The Silver Jug had to be handed back as this now became a perpetual trophy. However the Silver Claret Jug was not presented to the winner at the 1872 Open as it was not completed in time. The trophy was engraved at a later date.

Sgt. York

Sgt. York, a standardbred (an American breed of trotting and pacing horses developed especially for harness racing by crossing Thoroughbreds with Morgans and other breeds) was selected to serve as the riderless horse that escorted the body of President Ronald Reagan at his State funeral, to the Capitol (the building in Washington, D.C., where the Congress of the United States meets) on June 11 2004.

Sgt. York a black gelding who was born on April 25th 1991, was a modest harness racehorse who used to run under the name of Allaboard Jules. He won five out of 23 races and $14,881 at Freehold Raceway, Yonkers Raceway and other tracks in the New York and New Jersey area's in the 1990's.

When his career as a harness racer ended in 1997, trainer David Brandwine approached Marie Dobrisky an employee of the New Jersey Racing Commission to see if she could help find the horse a job.
Marie Dobrisky's son, Sgt. Frank Dobrisky belonged to the Army unit in charge of funeral horses, the 3rd U.S. Infantry, Caisson Platoon. The horse was donated to the same Army unit at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. Fort Myer is an Army base near Arlington National Cemetery.

The horse was re-named Sgt. York and became a caparisoned horse (decorated warhorse), which trails the caisson (gun carriage) without a rider as a tribute to a fallen hero.

First Amateur To Win European Golf Tour Event

Pablo Martin-Benavides became the first amateur to win a European Golf Tour event when winning the Estoril Open de Portugal at Oitavos Golfe, Quinta da Marinha, Portugal on 1 April 2007

David Nicholson

My first job when I left school was working for David Nicholson the racehorse trainer as a stable lad. The date I started with him was September 10th 1984.

The first horses I looked after were Golden Raider, Lawnswood Miss and The Shiner

None of them did much good that season in their races for "The Duke". The yard was full of some sort of virus and we only had 17 winners. Quite a drop from the 64 winners the season before. There were many good horses in the yard at that time including Very Promising, Gambir, Goldspun, Voice of Progress, Charter Party, French Union and Connaught River. They were so out of sorts that season 1984/85 and it was quite a harsh Winter into the bargain. I remember the snow drifts used to fill the Cotswold lanes around the yard and we would just walk, trot and hack around the fields. Nicholson was a master at keeping his horses going in bad weather. They always seemed to come out as fit as anybody's horses after a hold-up due to the weather. I believe that in the Spring of 1985 Nicholson's horses probably ran as good as they had all season - Connaught River 2nd at the Cheltenham Festival and Goldspun 3rd in the Stayer Hurdle.

Still, it was a poor season and one or two horses left the yard. One of those horses was a horse that I looked after Golden Raider who went to Martin Pipe. Golden Raider after unplaced runs at Bangor, Doncaster and Huntingdon for us won for Pipe at Ludlow in 1985 and in the process became Pipe's 50th winner of the season. It was the first time that Pipe had trained fifty winners in a season and a unique fact about that first fifty for him was that they had all been over hurdles.

Actually, The Shiner another horse I looked after left half-way through the season and went to David Murray Smith and he won a couple of staying hurdles but I wasn't sad to see the back of him as I will never forget he bit me right in the middle of my back when I was mucking him out one morning and it didn't half make my eyes water.

Lester Piggott

Lester Piggott was born at Wantage on the 5th November 1935

He was apprenticed to his father Keith at Lambourn and came in to the limelight when riding his first winner on The Chase in the Wigan Selling Plate at Haydock Park on 18th August 1948, when only twelve years of age.

The following season he had six winners from 120 rides and within two years of his first winner Piggott, still only 14 years old was established as a top class lightweight riding 52 winners from 404 mounts and finishing 11th to Gordon Richards in the list of winning jockeys.

In 1952 Lester Piggott had his first ride in the Epsom Derby when riding Gay Time owned by Mrs J V Rank. The combination were beaten three quarters of a length by Charlie Smirke riding Tulyar.

In the 1953 Epsom Derby Lester Piggott finished 15th riding a horse called Prince Charlemagne. The interesting part about this being that in 1954 Piggott won the Triumph Hurdle at Hurst Park on the same horse.

Also in 1954 and only three months after winning the Triumph Lester Piggott rode his first Derby winner on Never Say Die owned by Mr R S Clark and trained by J Lawson in Newmarket at odds of 33/1.

In 1955 Lester Piggott succeeded Sir Gordon Richards as first jockey to Noel Murless and for the first time rode more than 100 winners in a season ending up with 103 and being third to Doug Smith in the jockeys table.

In 1960 Piggott rode 170 winners from 640 mounts and became Champion Jockey for the first time.

After losing the jockey's title in 1961 with 164 winners against Scobie Breasley's 171 and only riding 96 winners in 1962 when fourth to Breasley, he narrowly failed to regain the jockey's title in 1963 going down by 1 winner again to Breasley after winning the last race of the season at Manchester on Fury Royal.
This was the last race to be run at Manchester Racecourse

At the 1965 Royal Ascot meeting Piggott rode eight winners
Casablanca in the Royal Hunt Cup for Noel Murless
Bracey Bridge in the Ribblesdale Stakes for Noel Murless
Sweet Moss in the Rous Memorial for Noel Murless
Young Emperor in the Coventry Stakes for Paddy Prendergast
Tin King in the New Stakes for Fulke Johnson Houghton
Fighting Charlie in the Gold Cup for F Maxwell
Swift Harmony in the Chesham Stakes for E Reavey
Brave Knight in the King George V Stakes for Walter Nightingall

Piggott rode as a freelance jockey in 1967 retaining his title. In the ensuing years as a result of his freelance status he was able to ride the best of British, French and Irish horses most notably those to be found in the Vincent O'Brien yard which included greats such as Sir Ivor, Nijinsky (on whom he won the Triple Crown), Roberto, Boucher, Alleged, Solinus, Meneval, Godswalk, Try My Best, Artaius and The Minstrel.

He also formed a winning relationship with the Nelson Bunker Hunt owned / Maurice Zilber trained Dahlia on whom he won the 1974 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This was a memorable day (27 July 1974) for Piggott as he notched his 3,000th career win on Roussalka earler in the day plus two other winners besides.

In 1975 Lester Piggott was awarded an OBE. He also won the Oaks on Juliette Marny and once again rode eight winners at Royal Ascot.

Teenoso in 1983 provided Piggott with his ninth Derby winner which is the record for the most Derby winners ridden.

Piggott retired from race riding at the end of the 1985 flat season to become a trainer but in 1987 he was jailed for three years (served 366 days) for tax irregularities. He was stripped of his OBE awarded in 1975 as a result.

In 1990 Piggott returned to race riding winning the Breeders Cup Turf on Royal Academy for Vincent O'Brien.

Lester Piggott rode his final classic winner on Rodrigo de Triano in the 1992 2000 Guineas for Peter Chapple-Hyam

Lester Piggott rode his last British winner in October 1994 on Palacegate Jack for Cockerham trainer Jack Berry at Haydock in the King's Regiment Cup Conditions Stakes and retired finally in 1995.

In total Lester Piggott rode 4,493 winners including 30 English Classics and was Champion Jockey 11 times.

Jackdaws Castle Mole

When I was looking after two time Champion Chaser Viking Flagship back in 1995 he was going to run in the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Ascot.

Flagship had been installed as favourite for the race on the strength of his two previous races when he won the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park and the Castleford Chase at Wetherby. Of course he was set to carry plenty of weight, 12 stone but he was the reigning Champion.

The horse had been in great form in the build up to the race but during the week before he went lame on the gallops.

By the time the horses got back in from first lot and Flagship had been diagnosed as having an abcess in his foot the press and bookmakers were on the phone wanting to know about the well-being of the horse.
Who had tipped them off?

Nicholson was in the south of France and he didn't know Viking Flagship was unsound until later in the day.

Anyhow it was only three days before the race and it was panic stations at Jackdaws Castle. Rumours of his lameness were denied and everything was made out to be ok. This could not have been further from the truth. I had to "tub" his foot twice a day (soak it to draw out any puss in the foot) and he wasn't properly sound until the Thursday night. He was a fit horse and a couple of days easy would not of had too much effect on his fitness but add to that the lameness and I can't say that I fancied him that much.

On the day of the race at Ascot, the saturday, Nicholson told me not to walk him on the grass. I dare say the reason for this was so that any sharp-eyed paddock judges would not be thinking that we were trying to save his feet.

Flagship was quite strong to lead up at the races normally but on this occasion he was very strong and quite a handful. We all thought he seemed very well and were not too worried about his foot as he was definitely not showing that it may be bothering him anymore. We had quite a job getting him saddled up as he kept "cow-kicking" and hitting the saddling up box walls.

Flagship started 11/4 favourite so even after all the rumours there was still plenty of money for him. Obviously the money was wrong and he ran his poorest race of the season being niggled along quite early on in the race and coming home in fifth place 27+ lengths behind the winner Marthas Son who carrying only 10-9 absolutely scooted home and on hindsight was a handicap certainty going on to win the 1997 Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Viking Flagship came home sound and was none the worse for the race but who at Jackdaws Castle had let it slip to the bookmakers that all was not well with Flagship?
Who was the Jackdaws Castle mole?

Rumours had it that the mole wore glasses but I think that was a load of b*llocks - he may do now but not then!

Windsor Jump Racing

I quite liked Windsor as a jump track, they were lovely fences.

I can't say that I was greatly experienced there as I have only been to the course twice.

The first time I went racing at Windsor I led up Charter Party, he didn't go very well that particular day. I think going left-handed and then right-handed around the figure of eight course probably confused him a bit - he probably lost count how many times he had been around!

I remember that "the Duke" (David Nicholson) took me racing that day in the car with him and his "missus". When we got there the racecourse car park was quite wet and Nicholson went to the boot of his car and got some big rubber shoes out and put them on over the top of his ordinary shoes - it was the first time I had ever seen galoshes.

The second time I went there was to ride in a three mile handicap chase which I won so I am bound to have a soft spot for Windsor - the picture of me jumping the water jump even ended up on the front page of The Sporting Life the next day.

Lewes Racecourse

Lewes was a narrow horseshoe shaped course, at the extreme point of which was the starting post for two mile races.
Lewes Racecourse was regarded as an easy right handed course and had slight undulations.

Long distance races started on the rise whilst one mile races were on a down gradient.

High numbers were best for races above 6 furlongs

Low numbers were favoured on the straight course for sprints

Lewes was famous for one of the most remarkable races of all time, when in the Astley Stakes of 1880, three horses finished as a triple dead-heat a short head in front of two that dead-heated so only a short head divided the first five horses home.

Lewes Racecourse last meeting was on 14 September 1964

The outline of Lewes Racecourse can be seen on the left hand-side of this map (it is shaped like an upside down U).

Hennessy Gold Cup

1985/86 was my second National Hunt season at David Nicholson's and when the lad that looked after Charter Party left Nicholson's yard at the end of the 1984/85 season I was given Charter Party to look after by Lynn Burrows, Nicholson's Head Lad.

It was a very proud moment for me to be given the horse as he was one of the stable stars at the time and even in the lean season that Nicholson had in 1984/85 had still won three races for the yard.

Not only did I look after Charter Party but I also rode him out at exercise. He was a very big bay gelding by Document out of Ahoy There and was a good ride on the gallops but could be very clumsy walking up the road. He did actually fall over on the road twice. His clumsiness was something that was carried on at the racecourse as he did have a bit of a habit of hitting a fence or two and the odd fall.

The first time I took Charter Party to the races was for a Handicap Chase at Wincanton Races in October 1985. He was ridden by Peter Scudamore.
There was not a big field but we did not fancy Charter Party to strongly as being a big horse he always needed a run. We were very pleased with him when he finished second to one of Nick Gaselee's decent chasers called Duke of Milan ridden by Steve Smith Eccles.

Charter Party was entered in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury Racecourse which was just over a fortnight later and we were quite excited about our chances as only the weekend before the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup the yard had won four races at Chepstow and the horses seemed in excellent form.

Peter Scudamore rode Charter Party in the 1985 Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup and after settling mid-div jumping quite soundly they moved through the field and with only two to jump there was only Galway Blaze ridden by Mark Dwyer, trained by Jimmy Fitzgerald and Charter Party with Scu sitting quite still left in contention in the race.
Jeremy Willis, Nicholson's Travelling Head Lad and myself were just starting to shout "Go on Scu" when Charter Party fell.
Two to jump and a possible Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup victory in sight and CP fell and we were done. Still, Galway Blaze was travelling like a good thing at the time too and would probably have found more "toe" than Charter Party from the last. Scu seemed to think so and thought that we would have been second if they'd managed to stand up.

Anyhow, the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup was a race that I had grown up reading about along with the exploits of great horses such as Arkle, Mill House and Mandarin and here was I in only my second season in racing involved with the business end of it all and although not successful this time better things were to come from Charter Party.

Very Promising

The first big winner that Richard Dunwoody rode for trainer David Nicholson was Very Promising in the Mackeson Gold Cup. This was in 1986.

Very Promising had been a decent hurdler for Mercy Rimell finishing third in the 1984 Champion Hurdle behind Dawn Run but was sold and went to Nicholson's where he was looked after by stable lad Steve Lovejoy.

For the 1984/85 season Nicholson sent Very Promising chasing and he took to fences well winning novice chases at Newbury and Haydock and was ridden at this time by Peter Scudamore. He also finished third in the 1985 Arkle Chase behind Boreen Prince.

In Very Promising's second season over fences he started with a win at Chepstow in a smallish race ridden by Scudamore. I remember the day quite well as at that time the Nicholson yard was just starting to show a bit better form after a very poor 1984/85 season when he had only trained 17 winners and the horses had gone down to about the 35 mark (from 60). The reason that I remember the day was that we had four runners going at Chepstow and they all won and all four were ridden by Peter Scudamore. They were Tickite Boo, French Union (more commonly known as French Onion and who later won the 1987 Grand Annual Handicap Steeplechase), Cottage Run and Very Promising. A great day capped off with a good night in the Coach & Horses "top pub" at Longborough!

In his following two races Very Promising won the H&T Walker Goddess Chase and the Lambert and Butler Premier Chase Final both were for second season steeplechasers ie the year after being a novice and both at Ascot, these races were quite valuable at the time.
He was ridden by Peter Scudamore.

Very Promising didn't win agian in the 1985/86 season and Nicholson had a new jockey for the start of the 1986/87 season as Peter Scudamore had gone as first Jockey to Fred Winter and Richard Dunwoody who had been riding as second jockey to the yard in 1985/86 now came in for the job as stable jockey.

Very Promising's lad Steve Lovejoy left the yard too at this time and VP was now looked after by David "Scouse" Barker.

The win that put the Dunwoody and Nicholson partnership on the map was Very Promising in the 1986 Mackeson Gold Cup.

VP carrying 11-13 and ridden by Richard Dunwoody won in good style.

As it was my weekend off I had driven flat out up the M5 to get home and see the race on TV only just making it in time for the race.

By winning the Mackeson Gold Cup, which is the first big chase in the National Hunt calendar, it felt like the yard was really firing on all cylinders at last. 1984/85 had been very poor and although 1985/86 was better with Very Promising's two big wins at Ascot and wins by Solar Cloud in the Triumph Hurdle and Charter Party in the Ritz Club Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival we had only ended up with 21 winners.

Very Promising winning the Mackeson Gold Cup meant that the Nicholson yard had stepped up another level on it's recovery from the doldrums and I believe that it was wins such as this that set the foundations for David Nicholson becoming Champion National Hunt Trainer in both 1993/94 and 1994/95 when at the Jackdaws Castle Stables.

After winning the Mackeson Gold Cup Very Promising embarked upon an ambitious mission to Ireland for the Black and White Whiskey Champion Chase at Leopardstown just after Christmas 1986 and won the valuable race in good style partnered by Richard Dunwoody.

I remember riding Very Promising twice at exercise and the first of these occasions was just before the Black and White Whiskey Champion Chase. The race itself was in mid-week and on the prior Sunday morning the "Duke" wanted the horse to have a pipe opener up the grass gallop at his old yard at Condicote near Stow-on-the-Wold.
Very Promising's usual rider Paul Carvill was off for the weekend so I was told to put my tack on Very Promising as I was going to give him his work that morning. Being only 18 years of age this was quite a big feather in my cap at the time as I was getting to ride out the best horse in the yard. I was used to riding Charter Party as he was one of the horses that I "did" but Very Promising was a "different kettle of fish."
I remember Lynn Burrows the Head Lad saying to me in his stern Welsh accent "Don't let the f***ker fall over with you boyo!"
As I lead VP down the yard to the gate to be legged up the "Duke" was there waiting for us, his big hand was raised with his finger pointing at me. Now what was he going to say, I thought.
"Richard, look after the f***ker, he's my best horse" said the "Duke".
I'd had my orders.
Very Promising was quite an experience to ride. We were told to canter for about four furlongs and I remember how he carried his head so low with his mouth open slightly and his teeth bared. His front legs looked to be going either side of his head as he carried it that low and the power that you could feel running through that very fit horse was awesome.
Next we came a good pace on the grass for about six furlongs. He was strong when you were going steady but when you went quicker his head came up from between his knees and that was when you truly became the passenger. For me at the time he was breathtaking to ride, not only did he treat me as a passenger in his fast work but to show his genuineness and professionalism he also knew where to pull up for the end of his work.

Fortunately the work went well and three days later Very Promising won the Black and White Whisky Champion Chase.

Very Promising was a top class horse over two and a half miles, was very nearly top class over two miles when third in a Champion Hurdle, third in an Arkle and third in a Champion Chase and in addition seemed very good when he tried three miles when placed in the Vincent O'Brien Gold Cup at Leopardstown in Ireland.

Viking Flagship

Viking Flagship

During my second spell with Champion National Hunt Trainer David Nicholson I was lucky enough throughout the 1994/95 National Hunt Season to have Viking Flagship as one of the four horses that I looked after, the other three were Silver Wisp, Master Hope and Shanker.

Anyhow, after leaving Nicholson's yard for the first time back in 1987 I had always followed his horses at the races and when one day in December 1991 Nicholson had a four year old called Viking Flagship running at Newton Abbot ridden by the 7lb claimer Warren Marston it just interested me a little. Viking Flagship had previously been with ex Champion National Hunt Trainer Martin Pipe and had won four races for Pipe including one on the all-weather at Lingfield Park and looked an interesting addition to the Nicholson yard.
The race itself at Newton Abbot was just a 2 mile and half a furlong 0-125 handicap hurdle and Viking Flagship had top weight of 12 stone. He led until the sixth but soon weakened and I have got to say that watching on the SIS in the bookies I was quite disappointed in the way a Nicholson horse had ran as although the "Dukes" horses came on for a run they were never unfit and yet Viking Flagship ran as if he badly needed the run.

I found it very interesting to see that Nicholson pulled Viking Flagship out again at Kempton Park only 10 days later in another 2 mile handicap hurdle once again ridden by Warren Marston and after leading to the sixth ran on steadily enough to finish fourth only five lengths behind the winner Rodeo Star. A bit more encouraging.

David Nicholson had quite a few principals as a trainer and as a rule hardly ever ran horses on firm ground or ran them again quickly after a race and yet here was Viking Flagship pulling out again for the third time in 26 days on good to firm ground in a handicap hurdle at Ascot Racecourse this time ridden by ex Champion Jockey Richard Dunwoody.
Yet again after leading for three quarters of the race Viking Flagship just stayed on at one pace and finished slightly further behind the winner Rodeo Star than he had done at Kempton Park.

It seemed as if Viking Flagship liked going racing as only five days later he was off again to Taunton for a 2 mile and half a furlong 0-140 handicap hurdle and ridden with a little more restraint by Richard Dunwoody bolted up. The horse obviously took some getting fit but took his racing well which was worth remembering for later on his career.

This was early in 1992 and although Viking Flagship didn't win again in the 1991/92 season he ran well when third in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and third at the Aintree Grand National meeting.

It was at this point that Nicholson moved to Jackdaws Castle from Cotswold House in Condicote near Stow-on-the-Wold and was advertising for stable staff in the Sporting Life. I jumped at the opportunity and phoned him up straight away and asked for a job.
I had already worked for him from 1984 to 1987 but he said to go down the following day and ride out.
I dare say he just wanted to see if I could still ride!
In fact I rode two lots that morning Beauchamp Grace (a Million In Mind Partnership horse) first lot and Uncle Mogy (owned by Lord Vestey) second lot and by the time that I got back in from second lot the "Duke" had beggared off racing and I was still none the wiser if I had the job or not.
The secretary said that I should ring up that evening and see what he says.
Anyhow, I rang him again and asked if I could have a job and he replied "You need to get yourself fit. You're as fat as shit!"

I thought thanks very much, exactly how fat is shit?

Nicholson did not mince his words and on occasions was not the easiest to talk to. Sometimes there could be a stoney silence during telephone conversations when you would wonder if he was still there and this was one of those times. What do I say know?

Once again I asked him if I could have a job and he said "Yes but your not riding in races for me. Start on Monday."

That was it I had a job at Jackdaws Castle and in to the bargain I did ride racing for him again during the second season there.

Viking Flagship was not seen again at the races again until early 1993 when between the 2 of February and 29 of April he had seven races falling in the first of them at Nottingham and then winning the following six on the bounce at Wolverhampton, Leicester, Wincanton, Chepstow and then two in the space of three days at the Punchestown Festival in Ireland.
Viking Flagship had been entered at the Cheltenham Festival but had side stepped there as the going in the Spring of 1993 was quite dry and as Viking Flagship had met with a bit of leg trouble in the past it was thought that the going in Ireland would be better so he was entered in a couple of valuable races at the Punchestown Festival. The idea being that just in case of any mishaps in the first race he could run in the second.
The first of these races was the BMW Handicap Chase worth 25,000 and after disputing the lead Viking Flagship went on approaching the last and won well.
Two days later Viking Flagship was entered in the Bank Of Ireland Novice Chase and it was decided that as he had come out of the first race well he would try his luck again. Viking Flagship showed he was made of pretty tough stuff and that he was none the worse for wear by winning again.

It was then, in between the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons that Richard Dunwoody left Nicholson's and went to Martin Pipe as first jockey with Adrian Maguire becoming the Nicholson stable jockey and Viking Flagship had himself a new rider.

In his second season as a chaser, after needing his first couple of runs at Haydock and Newbury, finishing second on both occasions, Viking Flagship started to go from strength to strength and after being reunited with Richard Dunwoody, won the 1994 Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Warwick a race in which Adrian Maguire rode what was possibly at the time the Nicholson first string runner Waterloo Boy to finish fourth of four runners.

This was followed by an authoritive win in the Mitsubishi Shogun Game Spirit Chase at Newbury Racecourse with Maguire back in the saddle and then the superb win in the 1994 Queen Mother Champion Chase.
This win showed what a brilliant combination Maguire and Viking Flagship were when at the second last with defeat staring them in the face Maguire threw Viking Flagship in to the fence with not a care in the world and the horse stood off a mile from the jump which when you consider they only beat Travado by a neck could be considered as their race winning manoeuvre.

Defeat followed at Liverpool in the Martell Aintree Chase but the horse had earned his money for the season and lost nothing in defeat on very heavy ground giving away a stone and six pound to Uncle Ernie who was trained by Jimmy Fitzgerald and ridden by Mark Dwyer.

During his initial years with Nicholson Viking Flagship was looked after by Jill Wormall. She had quite a fair three to look after at one point when she did Viking Flagship, Mysilv winner of the 1994 Triumph Hurdle and Another Coral winner of the 1991 Mackeson Gold Cup and 1992 Tripleprint Gold Cup.
Jill and myself used to ride first lot together, she would be on Viking Flagship and I would ride Silver Wisp.
These two horses were kept to the straight gallop for various reasons.
One morning Jill said to me that she was thinking of leaving the yard at the end of the season. I was the first to know and I thought right, Viking Flagship will be going spare next season and I shall ask if I can do him so that evening I asked Clifford Baker who was Nicholson's Head Lad if I could look after Viking Flagship if Jill ever left.
One thing lead to another and six weeks later just before the start of the 1994/95 season Clifford told me that I could do Viking Flagship during the forthcoming season.
What a scoop. From watching the four year old Viking Flagship run in a handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot on the SIS in the bookies I was now just about to start looking after the Champion Chaser Viking Flagship.

The first time I lead Viking Flagship up was in the 1994 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park.
We had two in the race Viking Flagship ridden by Adrian Maguire and Wonder Man ridden by Graham Bradley. Viking Flagship won the race nicely with Wonder Man fourth. It was a good day for the Nicholson yard as Relkeel had won the William Hill Handicap Hurdle earlier in the day.

The next race for Viking Flagship was the Castleford Chase at Wetherby where in very bad going Viking Flagship absolutely trounced his rivals.
It was rather an "all hands to the pump" sort of day as we were scheduled to have four runners at Wetherby all due to be ridden by Adrian Maguire but jockey and trainer got held up in traffic and did not get there for the first two runners Seaward in the Juvenile Hurdle and Arthur's Minstrel in the handicap chase. Replacement jockeys were found, Brian Storey for Seaward and Peter Niven for Arthur's Minstrel. Russ Garrity was booked for the final runner of the day Raisin Turf but Viking Flagship was left open to the last minute.
I had to help Jeremy Willis the travelling head lad saddle up these runners before rushing back to the stable yard to get Viking Flagship ready for his race.
Arthur's Minstrel just managed to get his head in front for a short head victory so at least we were off the mark for the day. Was Adrian going to get there in time for the plum ride on Viking Flagship though? The answer was yes, with two minutes to spare, Adrian Maguire quickly weighed out, the tack was "thrown on" and the combination like true pros that they were just went out and did the business with the minimum of fuss. There was quite a lot of team work that day to keep the Jackdaws Castle bandwagon on the road.

Viking Flagship was two out of two for the season and was a hot favourite, even though he was set to carry 12 stone, for the big post Christmas sponsored race the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Ascot Racecourse.
In the days that led up to the race rumours were rife that the horse was not 100%, that he had been lame. Nicholson was out of the country and the big mystery was where had this rumour come from. It was alleged that the Jackdaws Castle "mole" was in operation. It was suggested that the "mole" was a wearer of glasses but I'm not so certain about this (or should I say I don't think he wore glasses all of the time - just some of the time).
I dare say that will make sense to some people.
Anyhow, Viking Flagship ran one of his few poor races when only managing to finish quite a well beaten fifth in a strongly run race, won by what was, as it turned out, a handicap good thing in Martha's Son who was carrying 10-9 who went on to win the 1997 Queen Mother Champion Chase for Captain Tim Forster.

The fourth time I lead Viking Flagship up was in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury.
It looked to be a good opportunity for Viking Flagship to get his season back on track as there were only three runners and he was the 2/5 favourite.
As I remember it was a horrible day and very wet.
The race got underway and everything looked like it was going to plan but disaster struck.
Adrian Maguire had just sent Viking Flagship to the front when just after landing at the fourth last the horse appeared to put his foot in a hole in the very heavy ground and fell leaving Nakir and Jamie Osborne to come home well clear of the other runner Snitton Lane. None the worse for wear Viking Flagship got to his feet and cantered riderless up past the winning post and ran straight up to me and I took him back to the stables.
The Champion Chaser had his colours lowered again!

With the Cheltenham Festival fast approaching Viking Flagship needed a run.
The Emblem Chase at Kempton Park was chosen. It was just over two weeks before the Queen Mother Champion Chase and looked a fairly easy sort of race and with stable confidence fairly high Viking Flagship was backed to odds-on but he was beaten again. Thumbs Up in receipt of a stone in weight beat him a length. I've got to say that I was disappointed with this run as Viking Flagship did not jump with his usual fluency and possibly lost the race at the last fence with a slow jump. I would have thought that the main reason for this was the very heavy ground at Kempton Park that day but at least Viking Flagship had done a good piece of work. We could go to Cheltenham with a bit more certainty about his fitness and at least he would be a backable propsition for the Champion Chase.

The day I lead Viking Flagship up in the 1995 Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham was also my last day racing for Nicholson as I had handed in my notice and had decided to leave but that took nothing away from the day as it was a once in a lifetime experience leading up the winner of the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Adrian Maguire had been hurt in the run up to Cheltenham and substitute jockeys for all the Nicholson horses were needed.
I remember we had three runners that day, Putty Road in the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle ridden by Norman Williamson, Viking Flagship in the Queen Mother Champion Chase with Charlie Swan on board and Kadi in the Mildmay Of Flete Challenge Cup Handicap Chase ridden by Norman Williamson.
All three won and a memorable treble at the Cheltenham Festival was achieved.

Viking Flagship was truly on form this day and beat Deep Sensation by 5 lengths taking up the running just after three out and winning most impressively.
The day was made even more the sweeter as I had a hundred pounds on him at 5/2.

1975 Sun Alliance Chase

1975 Sun Alliance Chase

The Sun Alliance Chase at the 1975 Cheltenham National Hunt Meeting was due to be run on Tuesday 11 March but owing to the waterlogged state of the course that day the racing was abandoned and the Sun Alliance Chase was re-scheduled for Thursday 13 March.

On the Thursday, by the time that the Gold Cup (which was the fifth race of the day) had been run the going was unsuitable for any more racing and the remainder of the card - the Sun Alliance Chase, County Handicap Hurdle and Cheltenham Cathcart Champion Hunters' Chase - was lost.

However, the 1975 Sun Alliance Chase was found another time to be run and actually took place at the Cheltenham Holman Cup meeting on Thursday April 17 1975, just over a month after it's intended date.

First Grey Horse to Win The Derby

Gustavus was the first grey to win the Derby

Gustavus, owned by Mr J Hunter and ridden by Samuel Day won the 1821 Epsom Derby

Gustavus was born in 1818. His sire was the 1807 Derby winner Election and his dam was Lady Grey. He was bred at the Six Mile Bottom Stud near Newmarket. As a yearling Gustavus was sold at a horse sale at Hampton Court for 25 Guineas to Mr J Hunter who was a member of the Jockey Club and a big betting man.

Gustavus was grey in colour which made him quite a rarity in those days.

As a two year old he won the July Stakes at Newmarket.

As a three year old he started off by winning the Newmarket Stakes and was then made favourite for the Derby and ridden by Sam Day won by half a length from Reginald.

In the 1821 St Leger he failed to stay the distance.

In the following season as a four year old he won the Claret Stakes at Newmarket but then following numerous failures was retired to stud eventually being exported to Prussia.

Ardent Spy

When I was still at school back in the early eighties my mum used to pick me up at the end of the day and she always brought the Sporting Life and the Sporting Chronicle for me to read on the way back home.
I always used to follow jockeys like John Francome, Lester Piggott and my friend the National Hunt rider Roy Davies who used to ride horses like Milliondollarman, Jo Colombo, Casbah, Pearlyman (in his early races) etc. As a matter of interest Roy Davies's last winner was Crowecopper at Wolverhampton and the same horse was my first in the Tom Beckett Amateur Riders Steeplechase at Uttoxeter on Midlands Grand National Day 1987. Crowecopper was also my first winner as a professional jockey at Bangor 1988.

One of the horses that John Francome used to ride was Ardent Spy for Roddy Armytage

Francome won novice chases on him

To cut a long story short when I became a professional jockey one of the horses I rode was Ardent Spy. I still can't hardly believe that one of the horses that I followed as a kid I ended up riding in races.
I won on Ardent Spy at a night meeting at Uttoxeter in 1990.
Not one of the great racehorses but from reading about Francome winning on him in the Sporting Chronicle to actually getting the leg up on him and winning the Freddy Dixon Memorial Trophy Handicap Steeplechase was and still is one of the high spots of my race riding career.

Adding to that I also rode Ardent Spy when he sadly died

Anyhow, here is the result of the Freddie Dixon Memorial Trophy Handicap Steeplechase
