The National Football League (NFL) is the largest professional American Football League.
Originally formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association it began to use the name "National Football League" in 1922.
Currently there are 32 teams playing in the NFL which is split into two conferences - the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference) - each of which has 16 teams. Each Conference is divided into four divisions having four teams per division. AFC Divisions are the AFC East, AFC North, AFC South and the AFC West. NFC Divisions are the NFC East, NFC North, NFC South and the NFC West.
The AFC East Division currently has four members they are the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and the New York Jets.
The AFC North Division currently has four members they are the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The AFC South Division currently has four teams which are the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans.
The AFC West Division has four teams playing in it which are the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders.
The NFC East Division currently has four teams which are the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.
The NFC North Division currently has four teams which are the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears.
The NFC South Division has four teams which are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers.
The NFC West Division currently has four teams which are the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams.
These teams all play a 16 game per side regular season schedule spread over seventeen weeks which includes one week when a team does not play called a bye week.
At the end of the regular season the twelve top seeded teams in the NFL (six from each Conference) go forward into the playoffs which are a series of games used to determine who will end up playing in the NFL Championship Game known as Super Bowl.
