when did liverpool last win the english league title

Liverpool last won an English League Title after winning the 1989-90 English First Division

Lord Beaverbrook

I was just watching Dad′s Army The Movie

I noticed when Captain Mainwaring was marching his Home Guard troops through a village a sign on a wall that said,

Scrap Paper and Cardboard Wanted
Lord Beaverbrook

It was the Lord Beaverbrook bit that caught my eye. In his time Lord Beaverbrook (Sir William Maxwell "Max" Aitken) had been the owner of Rolls Royce, the Daily Express and the Sunday Express.

The wife of Lord Beaverbrook was of course Lady Beverbrook who on the death of her husband took up horse racing as a pastime and was later the owner of Bustino the winner of the 1974 Doncaster St Leger. Other good horses she owned were Richboy, Bolboy, Sunyboy, Relkino and Petoski.

Runner-up in 1897 2000 Guineas

Velasquez (1894) a bay horse by Donovan out of Vista, was bred by the 5th Earl of Rosebery.

As a two year old he won the New Stakes at Royal Ascot, the July Stakes at Newmarket, the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster but he got beaten by Galtee More in the Middle Park Stakes.

The following year as a three year old Velasquez was again second to Galtee More in both the Newmarket 2000 Guineas and the Derby at Epsom. However, he did go on and win the Princess of Wales′s Stakes, Champion Stakes and at 4 years of age won the Eclipse Stakes and the Champion Stakes.

Velasquez retired to stud in 1899 but died in 1906.

Galtee More

Galtee More (1894) was trained by Sam Darling at Beckhampton.

As a two year old he won the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, the Rous Plate at Doncaster and the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket where he beat Velasquez. His one defeat at two came at Liverpool in the Lancashire Breeders Stakes when Glencally beat him a short head.

As a three year old Galtee More won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket beating Velasquez, the Newmarket Stakes at Newmarket, the Derby at Epsom beating Velasquez, the Prince of Wales′s Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Sandringham Cup at Sandown, the St Leger at Doncaster and the Sandown Park Foal Stakes at Sandown. He also ran in the Cambridgeshire Handicap with 9 stone 6lb but did no good.

When he finished racing at the end of 1897 he was sold to the Russian Government for £21,000 where he did well as a stallion siring amongst others, Irish Lad who was rated the best horse ever bred in Russia.

Galtee More was eventually sold to the Germans for £14,000 where he sired many good winners.

Galtee More died in 1917.

Ben Roethlisberger the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback practiced again on Friday.

This came after sitting out two days because of a sore right shoulder when Steelers backup QB Charlie Batch ran the starting offense in practice both on Wednesday and Thursday.

A sign that Roethlisberger is hoping to play Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Physical Battle Between Steelers and Jags

When the Pittsburgh Steelers face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, they know they're in for a physical game.

Colts can take division with win over Raiders

The Indianapolis Colts can clinch the division with a win over the Oakland Raiders. However, there does seem to be one similarity between the Colts and Sunday's opponents the Raiders and that is their consistency, albeit at either end of the scale.

On Sunday the Indianapolis Colts can become the first team in the history of the NFL to achieve five 12-win seasons on the bounce if they can beat Oakland at the McAfee Coliseum. The Raiders are trying to avoid quite the opposite - their fifth consecutive year with at least 10 losses.

Over five seasons the Indianapolis Colts 61-16 record is second only to the New England Patriots 63-14.
