why no british open in 1871

There was no British Open in 1871 due to the fact that in 1870 Tom Morris Jr. had won the Championship belt for the third time and so it became his permanent property and as a result there was no trophy to be awarded for the following year.

The Championship was revived in 1872 when the Prestwick Golf Club, Royal & Ancient Club and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers together bought a Silver Claret Jug and along with a Gold Medal awarded these to the winner of the Open Championship. The Silver Jug had to be handed back as this now became a perpetual trophy. However the Silver Claret Jug was not presented to the winner at the 1872 Open as it was not completed in time. The trophy was engraved at a later date.
