The Houston Texans play in the Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team (which is a brand new team in a sports league).
Houston had a pro football team before, the Houston Oilers (an original member of the American Football Legue / AFL) but when Oilers owner Bud Adams got approval to move them to Tennessee (firstly as Tennessee Oilers later as Tennessee Titans) it left Houston without a pro team for the first time since 1959.
On October 6, 1999 the NFL awarded Houston an expansion franchise.
Throughout 2000 events moved swiftly. Firstly, on January 19 2000, the Texans hired the Washington Redskins former General Manager Charley Casserly to head the Texans football operations. Secondly, on March 9 groundbreaking ceremonies for the new football stadium took place. The Reliant Stadium was to become the first retractable roof stadium in the NFL. Finally, on September 6 Houston′s new football team was officially named as the Houston Texans.
The Texans hired the teams first head coach Dom Capers on January 21 2001 and in turn Capers filled the rest of the staff vacancies which included hiring former Cleveland Browns head coach Chris Palmer as his offensive coordinator.
On September the 25th 2001 the Texans unveiled their new uniforms which also coincided with the Houston Texans Cheerleaders making their debut.
The Houston Texans first season in the NFL was 2002 when they became the first team for 41 years (since Minnesota Vikings beat Chicago Bears 37 - 13 on September 17 1961) to win their expansion team debut when the Texans defeated the Dallas Cowboys 19 - 10 at the Reliant Stadium.
On the 2 January 2006, after four years of moderate success, the Texans fired Head Coach Dom Capers and most of his staff and in turn hire former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak as their new head coach.
On October 1 2006 the Texans defeat the Miami Dolphins 17 - 15 at Reliant Stadium to give Gary Kubiak his first win as a head coach in the NFL.
