First £1000 Football Transfer

Alfred Common was born 25 May 1880 and played as a forward for Sunderland, Sheffield United 1901-04 (signed for £325), Sunderland 1904-05 (signed for £520), Middlesbrough 1905-10 (signed for £1000), Woolwich Arsenal 1910-12 and Preston North End 1912-15.

Alf Common was the first four-figure football transfer when he moved from Sunderland to Middlesbrough in 1905 for £1000

He became a publican on his retirement and died 3 April 1946 in Darlington
