Pete Sampras
Pete Sampras was born in Washington DC, USA on the 12th August 1971
During his playing career he was nicknamed "Pistol Pete" because of his powerful serve
Sampras is widely considered as one of the best tennis players of all time and holds the record for the most wins in Grand Slam events with 14 to his credit - Wimbledon 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000; US Open 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2002; Australian Open 1994, 1997 but no wins in the French Open - and was the number 1 ranked tennis player for six consecutive years from 1993-98
Sampras started his professional career in 1988 and recorded his first Grand Slam victory in the 1990 US Open, defeating Andre Agassi in straight sets
In the 2002 US Open he again defeated Agassi 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
Sampras retired from tennis on 25th August 2003
