Major League Baseball is the highest level of North American Professional Baseball. Thirty teams are split between two leagues. These leagues are the American League and the National League each of which has three divisions AL East, AL Central and AL West in the American League and the NL East, NL Central and the NL West in the National League.
Currently the American League East contains five teams, they are the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays which are located in the Eastern United States and the Toronto Blue Jays who are in Canada.
The American League Central has five teams which are all located in the Midwestern United States. These teams are the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals.
American League West teams are located along the American West Coast and also in Texas. Teams from this division are Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners. The AL West is the only division to have just four teams in it.
The National League East contains five teams which are the Philadelphia Phillies,
Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, Washington Nationals, New York Mets.
The National League Central is currently the largest division with six member teams. These teams are the St Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates.
The National League West currently has five members which are the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks.
These teams play in a 162 game a side regular season schedule which starts in early April and ends late September (sometimes early October) after which the ALDS (American League Division Series) and NLDS (National League Division Series) games are then played to determine which two teams from each League progress to the respective League Championship Series. The teams that make these Division Series Games are the individual division winners plus a wild-card team (ie the team that finished in second place in a division with the best season record). It is the same method in both the ALDS and the NLDS.
The top Division Series teams (two in each League) then play a best of seven game series to decide which team is the winner of each of the corresponding League Championship Series (American League teams play in the ALCS and National League teams play in the NLCS).
The climax of the MLB Season and the culmination of the postseason playoff games is the World Series. The winner of the ALCS - American League Pennant plays the winner of the NLCS - National League Pennant in a best of seven series of games to determine the Champions of Major League Baseball.
