Steve Cauthen

Born in 1960 Steve Cauthen was breaking records as a 17 year-old when he rode an incredible 487 winners in his first full season, having ridden his first winner at the River Downs Ohio racetrack only a year earlier.

Cauthen landed the North American Triple Crown on Affirmed in 1978 but then had a bad run without a victory at the 1978-79 Santa Anita Winter meeting where he lost 110 races in a row.

Steve Cauthen came to England in the Spring of 1979 and won on his first ride in the country when Marquee Universal (Home Guard - Papillio by Pampered King), trained by Barry Hills, won at Salisbury in April 1979.
