1963 derby winning jockey

The winner of the 1963 Epsom Derby was Relko ridden by Yves Saint-Martin

Yves Saint-Martin was born in 1941 at a place called Agen, which is a town midway between Bordeaux and Toulouse in the Aquitaine region of southern France.

Saint-Martin was the son of a civil servant and had no background in racing but was apprenticed to François Mathet and learned a great deal from the brilliant French trainer.

Yves Saint-Martin was only seventeen when he rode his first winner at Le Tremblay in Northern France.

He rode his first British Classic winner in 1962 on Monade in the Oaks.

In 1970 Saint-Martin rode his first Prix de l′Arc de Triomphe winner on Sassafras beating Lester Piggott on Nijinsky II.
