Ralph Brown Funeral
Yesterday I went to the funeral of Ralph Brown at St Peter and St Paul′s Church in Wem, Shropshire.
It was quite a cold day but the church was well heated and what was even more warming was the amount of people that turned out to see Ralph off. I shall not hazard a guess at how many but the church was completely full.
The service itself was a good one and was quite light, nothing to heavy.
Ralph′s coffin was covered in the paddock sheet of the horse he used to look after who was called "Call It A Day". It was the sheet that the horse had worn when he finished 3rd in the 1999 Aintree Grand National.
We only sung one hymn which was "All Things Bright and Beautiful" but another song was played on CD which was "The Party′s Over" by Lonnie Donegan whose music Ralph was very fond of.
Among the mourners were quite a number of Ralph′s work colleagues, both recent and from the past. The recent one′s being from the Whitchurch Post Office and the old one′s were those that he had known when he worked in horse racing stables which included stable lads, lasses and jockeys.
The cortege moved from Wem and on to the Emstrey Crematorium at Shrewsbury where Ralph was cremated.
Those mourners still remaining returned to Ralph′s parents house just outside of Wem for the wake where many good stories about Ralph were retold.
