Gillingham FC were the winners of the 1963/1964 4th Division Championship. The interesting fact about this is that Gillingham and Carlisle United who finished second both had 60 points but the system in use at the time to decide tiebreakers – goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded) – put the Gills marginally in front (1.96 to 1.948) which gave them the Championship. These days goal difference – goals scored minus goals conceded – decides such situations and Carlisle United would win – +55 goals to +29 goals.
