Paddy Power Gold Cup

The Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) is run near the middle of November each year at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England over two miles four and a half furlongs with fifteen fences to be jumped. It is regarded as the first major National Hunt race of each jumps season.

Since it was first run in 1960 many top chasers have won this race. Winners are often well-fancied horses in the betting, from leading yards and ridden by top jockeys although good priced winners have occurred - Richard of Bordeaux for Fulke Walwyn at 20/1 ridden by Bobby Beasley, Chatham for Fred Rimell and Ken White at 33/1, Red Candle for G Vallance and Jimmy Fox at 20/1, Senor El Betrutti for Mrs Susan Nock and Jamie Osborne at 33/1 and more recently Exotic Dancer for Jonjo O′Neill and Tony McCoy at 16/1.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is the first important NH race of the jumping season where English and Irish horses do battle at Cheltenham away from the National Hunt Festival. There have been far more English trained winners of this race than Irish but interestingly enough Irish jockeys seem to do well (especially since 1986).

Certain trainers tend to have a good record in the race and have registered multiple wins such as Martin Pipe with eight wins (six of those for owner David Johnson), Fred Rimell with four wins and Fred Winter with three wins (all for owner Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin).

Jockeys with multiple wins include Tony McCoy, Richard Dunwoody and Richard Linley with a number of jockeys having two wins.

Josh Gifford has both ridden and trained the winner, firstly when riding 1967 winner Charlie Worcester and also he trained Bradbury Star to win the race in 1993 and 1994.

A lot of knowledgeable racing people consider good two and a half mile chasers as prospects for the Aintree Grand National but so far only one winner of this race Gay Trip (1969 and 1971) has actually gone on to Grand National success when winning the 1970 National.
