The Giants point scoring average had been 23.3 points per game which made their offense 14th best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 21.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 17th in the league. The New York Giants had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by 24 points to 14.

The New York Giants next postseason game was in the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys had finished 1st in the 2007 NFC East Division coached by Wade Phillips with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Cowboys point scoring average had been 28.4 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.3 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 13th in the league.

In regular season the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys had played against each other twice when it was the Dallas Cowboys who had won both fixtures. These two games had both been quite high scorelines. 45 - 35 and 31 - 20.

However, it was the New York Giants who certainly seemed to be playing with a mean streak who won a close game by 21 points to 17.

The New York Giants next playoff game was in the NFC Championship and their opponents were the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay Packers had finished 1st in the 2007 NFC North Division coached by Mike McCarthy with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Packers point scoring average had been 27.2 points per game which made their offense 4th best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 18.2 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 6th in the league.

During regular season the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers had played against each other once when it had been the Packers who had won easily by 35 points to 13.

In the 2007 NFC Championship between the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers it was the Giants who gained their revenge to win by sudden death in overtime. Victory came as a result of a Lawrence Tynes 47 yd field goal. The score was 23 points to 20.

The New York Giants opponents in Super Bowl XLII were the New England Patriots.

The New England Patriots finished 1st in the 2007 AFC East Division coached by Bill Belichick with a regular season record of 16-0-0. The Patriots point scoring average had been 36.8 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league.

The New England Patriots postseason games began with the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had finished 2nd in the 2007 AFC South Division coached by Jack Del Rio with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Jaguars point scoring average had been 25.7 points per game which made their offense 6th best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 10th in the league. The Jacksonville Jaguars had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers by 31 points to 29.

In regular season the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars had not played against each other but going by averages for points scored and conceded plus regular season win records then the Jaguars had no chance in this game. To put this into perspective, the Patriots had scored an average of 11 points more per game than the Jaguars all season.

The 2007 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the New England Patriots went as anticipated and was won quite comfortably by the Patriots 31 points to 20.

The New England Patriots next playoff game was the AFC Championship where their opponents were the San Diego Chargers.

The San Diego Chargers had finished 1st in the 2007 AFC West Division coached by Norv Turner with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Chargers point scoring average had been 25.8 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 32 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.8 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 5th in the league.

In regular season the New England Patriots and the San Diego Chargers had played against each other once when it was the Patriots who had won easily by 38 points to 14.

Basically, these two teams had similar averages for points conceded but the Patriots stood out a mile for their point scoring average and were not to be opposed.

The 2007 Conference Championship was won by the New England Patriots by 21 points to 12. Strength in offense was key to this game as the Patriots scored 3 touchdowns to the Chargers 0. In addition, the Patriots defense certainly had the measure of the Chargers offense as the only points they scored were through 4 field goals from 23, 24, 26 and 40 yards. A team would need to get closer to the goal line than the Chargers did to be worrying the Patriots!

Super Bowl XLII between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots had brought together two teams with extremely solid form. Although the Patriots looked to be favorite on the strength of their 18 consecutive victories the Giants challenge had gathered significant momentum throughout the playoff games and they were definitely not in Super Bowl XLII just to make up the numbers.

In regular season the New England Patriots and the New York Giants played against each other once when the Patriots had narrowly won by 38 - 35 and a close Super Bowl XLII game could be expected.

In the first quarter of Super Bowl XLII the early exchanges were fairly even but with 5 minutes and 1 second left it was the Giants who opened the scoring with a Lawrence Tynes field goal.

The New York Giants led 3 - 0.

The second quarter saw the New England Patriots get their heads in front following a Laurence Maroney touchdown and a successful kick by Stephen Gostkowski.

The New England Patriots led 7 - 3 at half-time.

The third quarter was very tight with a lot of good defensive work being done and no points were scored by either team.

The score was still 7 - 3.

Into the fourth quarter and Super Bowl XLII looked finely balanced but then came the pivotal point of the game. With 11 minutes and 5 seconds left of the game David Tyree caught an Eli Manning pass and scored touchdown followed by a Lawrence Tynes kick. The Giants had their noses in front by 10 - 7.

Hardly ever knowing when their beaten the Patriots came back and with 2 minutes and 42 seconds left of the game they regained the lead following a Randy Moss touchdown and a successful kick by Stephen Gostkowski. The Patriots now led 14 - 10.

There was to be one more final twist when with only 35 seconds left of the game the Giants scored the Super Bowl XLII winning points with a Plaxico Burress touchdown and a Lawrence Tynes kick.

Time had run out for the New England Patriots and they could not mount another serious attempt at goal.

Super Bowl XLII was won by the New York Giants by 17 points to 14.

Eli Manning the New York Giants Quarterback was named Super Bowl XLII MVP after he completed 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Super Bowl XXXV played on January 28, 2001, was won by the Champions of the AFC the Baltimore Ravens who defeated the NFC Champions the New York Giants at the Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida.

The Baltimore Ravens finished 2nd in the 2000 AFC Central Division coached by Brian Billick with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Ravens point scoring average had been 20.8 points per game which made their offense 14th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 10.3 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 1st in the league. The Baltimore Ravens had made the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Denver Broncos by 21 points to 3.

The Baltimore Ravens next playoff game was in the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Tennessee Titans.

The Tennessee Titans had finished 1st in the 2000 AFC Central Division coached by Jeff Fisher with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Titans point scoring average had been 21.6 points per game which made their offense 13th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 11.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league.

In regular season the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans had played against each other twice when either team had registered one victory apiece. Interestingly enough they had both lost their home fixture but won the away one.

In the 2000 AFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans it was the Titans who had home field advantage. Yet again the outcome followed the trend set in regular season when it was the away side, the Baltimore Ravens, who comfortably beat the Titans by 24 points to 10.

The Baltimore Ravens next playoff game was the AFC Championship where their opponents were the Oakland Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders had finished 1st in the 2000 AFC West Division coached by Jon Gruden with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Raiders point scoring average had been 29.9 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 18.7 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 9th in the league.

In regular season the Baltimore Ravens and the Oakland Raiders had not played against each other. However, a close game could be anticipated as the Oakland Raiders were a very good team in offense while the Baltimore Ravens were very mean in defense and had not been an easy team to score against.

In the 2000 Conference Championship it was the Baltimore Ravens defense who held the upper hand and the Oakland Raiders were allowed little in the way of scoring opportunities. The Raiders in fact scored their lowest total of points of the whole of the 2000 NFL season in this very game and in the end it was the Ravens who won after they secured a dour victory by 16 points to 3.

The Baltimore Ravens opponents in Super Bowl XXXV were the New York Giants.

The New York Giants had finished 1st in the 2000 NFC East Division coached by Jim Fassel with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Giants point scoring average had been 20.5 points per game which made their offense 15th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.4 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 5th in the league.

The New York Giants postseason games had begun with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles had finished 2nd in the 2000 NFC East Division coached by Andy Reid with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Eagles point scoring average had been 21.9 points per game which made their offense 12th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.3 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league. The Philadelphia Eagles had made the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Tampa Bay Buccaneers easily by 21 points to 3.

In regular season the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles had played against each other twice. The Giants clearly had the edge on the Eagles as they had won both games comfortably.

In the 2000 NFC Divisional Playoff fixture between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles it was once again the Giants who confirmed their superiority over the Eagles by scoring a 20 points to 10 victory.

Team

1

2

3

4

OT / Overtime

T / Total

Baltimore Ravens (AFC)

7

3

14

10

-

34

New York Giants (NFC)

0

0

7

0

-

7

Super Bowl XXXIV

Super Bowl XXXIV played on January 30, 2000, was won by the Champions of the NFC the St Louis Rams who defeated the AFC Champions the Tennessee Titans at the Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia.

The St Louis Rams finished 1st in the 1999 NFC West Division coached by Dick Vermeil with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Rams point scoring average had been 32.9 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league.

The St Louis Rams postseason games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings had finished 2nd in the 1999 NFC Central Division coached by Dennis Green with a regular season record of 10-6-0. The Vikings point scoring average had been 24.9 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 18th in the league. The Minnesota Vikings had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Dallas Cowboys by 27 points to 10.

In regular season the St Louis Rams and the Minnesota Vikings had not played against each other but the Rams were a superior team and not to be opposed.

The 1999 NFC Divisional Playoff Game between the St Louis Rams and the Minnesota Vikings was won by the Rams 49 points to 37.

The St Louis Rams next playoff game was the NFC Championship where their opponents were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had finished 1st in the 1999 NFC Central Division coached by Tony Dungy with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Buccaneers point scoring average had been 16.9 points per game which made their offense 27th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 14.7 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 3rd in the league.

In regular season the St Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had not played against each other. The Rams were a better offensive team but in defense the Buccaneers just had the edge.

The 1999 Conference Championship was a tight game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did their best to shackle the St Louis Rams offense but at the end of the day they came up short. The Rams battled well to win the Championship narrowly by 11 points to 6.

The St Louis Rams opponents in Super Bowl XXXIV were the Tennessee Titans.

The Tennessee Titans had finished 2nd in the 1999 AFC Central Division coached by Jeff Fisher with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Titans point scoring average had been 24.5 points per game which made their offense 7th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.2 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 15th in the league. The Tennessee Titans had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Buffalo Bills by 22 points to 16.

The Tennessee Titans next playoff game was in the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Indianapolis Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts had finished 1st in the 1999 AFC West Division coached by Jim Mora with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Colts point scoring average had been 26.4 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.8 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 17th in the league.

In regular season the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts had not played against each other. The two teams win records were identical 13-3-0 and their averages for points scored and conceded were grouped within quite a narrow margin of each other. A close game could be anticipated.

The Tennessee Titans won their 1999 AFC Divisional Playoff fixture against the Indianapolis Colts by 19 points to 16.

The Tennessee Titans next playoff game was the AFC Championship where their opponents were the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had finished 1st in the 1999 AFC Central Division coached by Tom Coughlin with a regular season record of 14-2-0. The Jaguars point scoring average had been 24.8 points per game which made their offense 6th best of 31 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 13.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 1st in the league.

In regular season the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars had played against each other twice when the Titans had been something of a thorn in the side of the Jaguars as the out of 16 games the Jags had only been defeated twice and both times it had been at the hands of the Titans. The first time by 20 points to 19 and the second time by 41 points to 14.

In the 1999 Conference Championship it was the Tennessee Titans who for the third time, got the better of the Jacksonville Jaguars to win by 33 - 14.

Super Bowl XXXIV between the St Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans looked a fairly close contest. Although the Rams had better averages for points scored and conceded it was the Titans who had actually won their regular season clash narrowly by 24 points to 21. In addition both teams had identical 13-3-0 records proving themselves to be good winning teams.

However, it could not be ignored the fact that the Rams had been the better point scoring team and on average they had scored over 8 points more per game than the Titans all season. Plus the Rams had conceded on average over 5 points less per game.

It is easy to say now but the Rams did look the more likely to win.

Super Bowl XXXIV started fairly slowly. In the first quarter the only scoring was a St louis Rams field goal by Jeff Wilkins.

The second quarter was not much better with two field goals from the Rams both by Jeff Wilkins.

At half-time the Rams led 9 - 0.

Towards the end of the third quarter things livened up a bit.

First it was the Rams to score a touchdown contributed by Torry Holt along with a Jeff Wilkins kick.

Then the Titans woke themselves up a bit and got a touchdown scored by Eddie George but the pass failed when they attempted a 2 point conversion.

At the end of the third quarter it was the St Louis Rams who led by 16 points to 6.

The fourth quarter did see the Titans stagw something of a rally and following another touchdown by Eddie George, a successful Al Del Greco kick and an Al Del Greco field goal they had dragged themselves level with the Rams at 16 - 16.

With only 1 minute 54 seconds remaining on the clock it was the Rams who scored the winning points when they got a touchdown by Isaac Bruce plus a successful kick by Jeff Wilkins.

The St Louis Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV by 23 points to 16.

Kurt Warner the St louis Rams quarterback was named Super Bowl XXXIV Most Valuable Player after he completed 24 of 45 passes for 414 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Note
The St Louis Rams playoff averages were 27.7 points scored per game (32.9 regular season) and an average of 19.7 points conceded per game (15.1 regular season).

The Tennessee Titans playoff averages (including Wild Card Game) were 22.5 points scored per game (24.5 regular season) and an average of 17.25 points conceded per game (20.2 regular season).

The Tennessee Titans playoff averages (not including Wild Card Game) were 22.7 points scored per game (24.5 regular season) and an average of 17.7 points conceded per game (20.2 regular season).

In Conclusion
A hard fought first victory in Super Bowl for the Rams

Tennessee Titans were defensively sound but scoring enough points against the top opposition proved too difficult.

Team

1

2

3

4

OT / Overtime

T / Total

St Louis Rams (NFC)

3

6

7

7

-

23

Tennessee Titans (AFC)

0

0

6

10

-

16

Super Bowl XXXIII

Super Bowl XXXIII played on January 31, 1999, was won by the Champions of the AFC the Denver Broncos who defeated the NFC Champions the Atlanta Falcons at the Pro Player Stadium, Miami, Florida.

The Denver Broncos finished 1st in the 1998 AFC West Division coached by Mike Shanahan with a regular season record of 14-2-0. The Broncos point scoring average had been 31.3 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.3 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 8th in the league.

The Denver Broncos postseason games began with the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Miami Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins had finished 2nd in the 1998 AFC East Division coached by Jimmy Johnson with a regular season record of 10-6-0. The Dolphins point scoring average had been 20.1 points per game which made their offense 16th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 1st in the league. The Miami Dolphins had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Buffalo Bills by 24 points to 17.

In regular season the Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins had played against each other once when the Dolphins had contained the Broncos offense well to win comfortably by 31 points to 21.

However, in the AFC Divisional Playoffs it was the Denver Broncos who absolutely blew the Dolphins apart to win by 38 points to 3.

The Denver Broncos next playoff game was the AFC Championship where their opponents were the New York Jets.

The New York Jets had finished 1st in the 1998 AFC East Division coached by Bill Parcells with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Jets point scoring average had been 26 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league.

In regular season the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets had not played against each other.

Basically, the Denver Broncos were very good in offense and the New York Jets were the better of the two teams in defense and really it was a toss up who would come out on top.

In the 1998 Conference Championship it was the Denver Broncos who got the better of the New York Jets to win by 23 - 10.

The Denver Broncos opponents in Super Bowl XXXIII were the Atlanta Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons had finished 1st in the 1998 NFC West Division coached by Dan Reeves with a regular season record of 14-2-0. The Falcons point scoring average had been 27.6 points per game which made their offense 4th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 18.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league.

The Atlanta Falcons playoff season games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers had finished 2nd in the 1998 NFC West Division coached by Steve Mariucci with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The 49ers point scoring average had been 29.9 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.5 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 13th in the league. The San Francisco 49ers had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Green Bay Packers by 30 points to 27.

In regular season the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers had played against each other twice when either team had quite comfortably won their home field fixture.

For the 1998 NFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers it was the Falcons who had home field advantage.

The Falcons won the game by 20 points to 18.

The Atlanta Falcons next playoff game was in the NFC Championship and their opponents were the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings had finished 1st in the 1998 NFC Central Division coached by Dennis Green with a regular season record of 15-1-0. The Vikings point scoring average had been 34.8 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 18.5 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 6th in the league.

During regular season the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings had not played against each other but the Vikings had been the best point scoring team in the league through regular season by quite some way and the Falcons needed to improve.

However, in the 1998 NFC Championship between the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings it was the Falcons who lifted themselves above what they had shown in regular season to win a very close game by 30 - 27.

Super Bowl XXXIII between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons looked a decent enough match-up. They had not actually played against each other in regular season but both had been in the top handful of teams. The Broncos had definitely been the better of the two at point scoring but the Falcons had been just that bit tighter in defense.

The first quarter of Super Bowl XXXIII saw the Atlanta Falcons score the early points after a Morten Andersen field goal but the Denver Broncos soon got themselves back in the game and following a Howard Griffith touchdown and a Jason Elam kick they were ahead.

At the end of the first quarter the Denver Broncos led 7 - 3.

The second quarter saw the Broncos extend their lead to 17 - 3. They scored points from a Jason Elam field goal, a touchdown from Rod Smith and a successful kick at goal by Elam.

During this second period of play the Falcons only managed a Morten Andersen field goal.

At the end of the second quarter it was the Denver Broncos with a 17 - 6 lead.

Third quarter was a stalemate with no points scored by either side.

However, the fourth quarter saw plenty of action. First it was the Denver Broncos who increased their lead to 31 - 6. This was as a result of two touchdowns, one by Howard Griffith and the other from John Elway plus two successful kicks at goal by Jason Elam.

Following the second of those Broncos touchdowns it was the turn of the Falcons to score and from the kick off they returned for a touchdown, after which a Morten Andersen kick at goal was successful.

The Broncos then scored a Jason Elam field goal.

The Atlanta Falcons finished off the scoring of the final quarter with a Terance Mathis touchdown.

The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl XXXIII by 34 points to 19.

John Elway the Denver Broncos quarterback was named Super Bowl XXXIII MVP after he passed for 336 yards and ran for a touchdown.

Note
The Denver Broncos playoff averages were 31.7 points scored per game (31.3 regular season) and an average of 10.7 points conceded per game (19.3 regular season).

The Atlanta Falcons playoff averages were 23 points scored per game (27.6 regular season) and an average of 26.3 points conceded per game (18.1 regular season).

In Conclusion
Denver Broncos can hardly be faulted and were very impressive in defense.

Atlanta Falcons defense was found guilty of desertion!

Team

1

2

3

4

OT / Overtime

T / Total

Denver Broncos (AFC)

7

10

0

17

-

34

Atlanta Falcons (NFC)

3

3

0

13

-

19

Super Bowl XXXII

Super Bowl XXXII played on January 25, 1998, was won by the Champions of the AFC the Denver Broncos who defeated the NFC Champions the Green Bay Packers at the Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California.

The Denver Broncos had finished 2nd in the 1997 AFC West Division coached by Mike Shanahan with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Broncos point scoring average had been 29.5 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 6th in the league. Although the Denver Broncos had been one of the better teams during regular season their route to the playoffs was as a Wild Card and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Jacksonville Jaguars by 42 points to 17.

After the AFC Wild Card Game the Denver Broncos next playoff opponents were the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

The Kansas City Chiefs had finished 1st in the 1997 AFC West Division coached by Marty Schottenheimer with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Chiefs point scoring average had been 23.4 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 14.5 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 1st in the league.

In regular season the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs had played against each other twice. The Broncos had won the first game easily when playing with home field advantage by 19 points to 3 but they had then lost to the Chiefs in a tight game when playing in Kansas City by 24 points to 22.

For the 1997 AFC Divisional Playoff tie between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs it was the Chiefs who had home field advantage.

The Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs were two good teams. Both ranked highly in the league for both offense and defense although looking at their averages for point scoring then the Denver Broncos had actually managed to score just over 6 points more per game on average than the Chiefs. The Broncos definitely held the upper hand in offense. Having said that, there was a difference in the points allowed averages as the Broncos had conceded on average over 3 points per game more than the Chiefs.

Please let me do my rule of thumb mathematics. The Broncos were capable of scoring over six points per game more than the Chiefs but conceded over 3 points more too. That could still leave the Broncos about 3 points ahead. How easy spread betting must be!

The Denver Broncos may have been the Wild Card team but they did the business alright to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Playoffs by 14 points to 10 (not quite the 3 guesstimated above).

The Denver Broncos next playoff game was the AFC Championship where their opponents were the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had finished 1st in the 1997 AFC Central Division coached by Bill Cowher with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Steelers point scoring average had been 23.2 points per game which made their offense 7th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.2 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 11th in the league.

In regular season the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers had played against each other once when it had been the Pittsburgh Steelers who had won quite comfortably by 35 points to 24. This could be considered a bit of an upset as the Broncos did appear to be the stronger in both offense and defense. Maybe it had been just an off day for the Broncos.

In the 1997 Conference Championship the Denver Broncos did manage to gain their revenge over the Pittsburgh Steelers but it was a close game and they only won by 24 - 21.

The Denver Broncos opponents in Super Bowl XXXII were the defending Super Bowl Champion′s the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay Packers had finished 1st in the 1997 NFC Central Division coached by Mike Holmgren with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Packers point scoring average had been 26.4 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 5th in the league.

The Green Bay Packers playoff season games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had finished 2nd in the 1997 NFC Central Division coached by Tony Dungy with a regular season record of 10-6-0. The Buccaneers point scoring average had been 18.7 points per game which made their offense 23rd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.4 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Detroit Lions by 20 points to 10.

In regular season the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had played against each other twice. The Green Bay Packers had won both times and they looked all set to make it the hat trick of victories over their fellow NFC Central rivals.

Sure enough the Green Bay Packers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1997 AFC Divisional Playoff Game winning by 21 points to 7.

The Green Bay Packers next playoff game was in the NFC Championship and their opponents were the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers had finished 1st in the 1997 NFC West Division coached by Steve Mariucci with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The 49ers point scoring average had been 23.4 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 3rd in the league.

During regular season the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers had not played against each other but the Packers had been the better point scoring team of the two by a nice margin. However, the 49ers had been the better defensively but not by a great way and I would say that the Packers would of had to be favorite to take the Championship.

In the 1997 NFC Championship between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers it was the Packers who won quite comfortably by 23 to 10.

Super Bowl XXXII between the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers had brought together two teams that were not only two of the very best teams from regular season but also quite fairly matched. However, although they were best and 2nd best in offense the Broncos had actually scored on average over 3 points more per game in regular season than the Packers. Defensive average difference was miniscule.

In regular season the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers had not played against each other but as regards picking out a team to win Super Bowl XXXII one would have had to go for the team that was the more likely to score some points and that team was the Denver Broncos.

In the first quarter of Super Bowl XXXII it was the Green Bay Packers who opened the scoring when they got a touchdown scored by Antonio Freeman followed by a Ryan Longwell kick.

The Denvers Broncos soon responded with a touchdown of their own from Terrell Davis along with a Jason Elam kick.

At the end of the first quarter the scores were level 7 - 7.

The second quarter saw the Broncos open up a 10 point lead after a John Elway touchdown, a Jason Elam kick and an Elam field goal. However, the Packers closed the gap to just 3 points when scoring a touchdown by Mark Chmura and a Ryan Longwell kick.

At half-time the score was 17 - 14 to the Broncos.

In the third quarter the Packers levelled the scores when Ryan Longwell scored a field goal but with only 34 seconds left in this period of play the Broncos got themselves back in front again when Terrell Davis scored touchdown and Jason Elam kicked successfully at goal.

The Broncos now led 24 -17.

In the fourth quarter it was the Green Bay Packers who came back again and levelled the scores once more with an Antonio Freeman touchdown and a Ryan Longwell kick.

However, in a game that went right to the wire the Broncos then managed to push their noses back in front. With just 1 minute 45 seconds left on the clock they scored with a touchdown by Terrell Davis and then Jason Elam kicked successfully at goal.

The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl XXXII by 31 points to 24.

Terrell Davis the Denver Broncos running back was named Super Bowl XXXII Most Valuable Player after he rushed for 157 yards and scored 3 touchdowns. Davis was the first player in the history of the Super Bowl to score 3 rushing touchdowns.

Note
The Denver Broncos playoff averages (not including the Wild Card Game) were 23 points scored per game (29.5 regular season) and an average of 18.3 points conceded per game (17.9 regular season).

The Denver Broncos playoff averages (including the Wild Card Game) were 27.8 points scored per game (29.5 regular season) and an average of 18 points conceded per game (17.9 regular season).

The Green Bay Packers playoff averages were 22.7 points scored per game (26.4 regular season) and an average of 16 points conceded per game (17.6 regular season).

In Conclusion
Quite a weird set of average figures for point scoring and conceding for both teams during the playoffs. Improvement can normally be seen in either offense or defense and quite often both but not in this case.

I suppose if one include′s the Wild Card Game in the Broncos averages then at least there is a noticeable difference between the two teams.

The Broncos obviously could score when it mattered most.

Team

1

2

3

4

OT / Overtime

T / Total

Green Bay Packers (NFC)

7

7

3

7

-

24

Denver Broncos (AFC)

7

10

7

7

-

31

Super Bowl XXXI

Super Bowl XXXI played on January 26, 1997, was won by the Champions of the NFC the Green Bay Packers who defeated the AFC Champions the New England Patriots at the Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Green Bay Packers had finished 1st in the 1996 NFC Central Division coached by Mike Holmgren with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Packers point scoring average had been 28.5 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 13.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 1st in the league.

The Green Bay Packers postseason games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers had finished 2nd (but with identical win record to the Carolina Panthers) in the 1996 NFC West Division coached by George Seifert with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The 49ers point scoring average had been 24.9 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league. The San Francisco 49ers had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Philadelphia Eagles by 14 points to 0.

In regular season the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers had played against each other once when the Packers playing with home field advantage had won a tight game by 23 points to 20.

For the 1996 NFC Divisional Playoff tie between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers it was the Packers who once again had home field advantage.

This was a very good tie and in other seasons would have more than passed as a Championship Game. However, the Packers showing somewhat more authority over the 49ers than they had in regular season won by 35 points to 14.

The Green Bay Packers next playoff game was the NFC Championship where their opponents were the Carolina Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers had finished 1st in the 1996 NFC West Division coached by Dom Capers with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Panthers point scoring average had been 22.9 points per game which made their offense 7th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 13.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league.

In regular season the Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers had not played against each other but looking for pointers it was the Packers who definitely had the edge in offense and defense plus a better win record.

In the 1996 Conference Championship the Green Bay Packers proved to be the classier team and beat the Carolina Panthers quite easily by 30 - 13.

The Green Bay Packers opponents in Super Bowl XXXI were the New England Patriots.

The New England Patriots had finished 1st in the 1996 AFC East Division coached by Bill Parcells with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Patriots point scoring average had been 26.1 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 14th in the league.

The New England Patriots playoff season games began with the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had finished 1st in the 1996 AFC Central Division coached by Bill Cowher with a regular season record of 10-6-0. The Steelers point scoring average had been 21.5 points per game which made their offense 11th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 16.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 4th in the league. The Pittsburgh Steelers had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Indianapolis Colts by 42 points to 14.

In regular season the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers had not played against each other. However, the Patriots did have a somewhat superior offense and on that basis looked to be the stronger of the two teams.

The 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff Game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers was won by the Patriots in good style by 28 points to 3.

The New England Patriots next playoff game was in the AFC Championship and their opponents were the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had finished 2nd in the 1996 AFC Central Division coached by Tom Coughlin with a regular season record of 9-7-0. The Jaguars point scoring average had been 20.3 points per game which made their offense 14th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 19th in the league. The Jacksonville Jaguars had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Buffalo Bills by 30 points to 27. The Jaguars had then played the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoffs who they had beat 30 - 27.

During regular season the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars had played against each other once when the Patriots had won a tight game by 28 points to 25.

Overall though the Patriots looked to be a far superior team to the Jaguars as they had the better averages for points scored and conceded, a better win record and they had already beaten the Jags in regular season. Plus they were playing with home field advantage.

In the 1996 AFC Championship between the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars it was the Patriots who easily won by 20 - 6.

Super Bowl XXXI appeared to have an odds on favorite in the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were the number 1 team from regular season in both offense and defense and they had won their NFC Playoff Games against very good opposition in good style. The Packers form looked rock solid.

The New England Patriots certainly had done nothing wrong when winning their AFC Playoff Games but the standard of opposition that they had faced was not particularly strong. However, they were a good attacking side and not to be underestimated.

The first quarter of Super Bowl XXXI saw the Green Bay Packers score the early points and they built up a 10 - 0 lead following an Andre Rison touchdown, Chris Jacke kick and a Chris Jacke field goal.

Before the end of the quarter though the New England Patriots struck back with two touchdowns of their own, one from Keith Byars and the other from Ben Coates along with two successful kicks by Adam Vinatieri.

The Patriots led 14 - 10.

In the second quarter the Packers relentlessly pushed forward and scored two more touchdowns, one from Antonio Freeman and the other by Brett Favre . The Cowboys had won easily at home but had lost narrowly in Philadelphia.

For the 1995 NFC Divisional Playoff tie between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles it was the Cowboys who had home field advantage. The Bills point scoring average had been 21.9 points per game which made their offense 13th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.9 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 12th in the league.

The Buffalo Bills had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Miami Dolphins by 37 points to 22.

In regular season the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills had not played against each other. Looking at their average figures for points scored then it was the Steelers who were the better, while in defense going by their averages for points conceded there was not a great deal between them. The Steelers were the pick for this game because of the simple fact that they could score better.

The 1995 AFC Divisional Playoff Game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Buffalo Bills was won by the Steelers 40 - 21.

The Pittsburgh Steelers next playoff game was in the AFC Championship and their opponents were the Indianapolis Colts who had finished 2nd in the 1995 AFC East Division coached by Ted Marchibroda with a regular season record of 9-7-0. The Colts point scoring average had been 20.7 points per game which made their offense 17th best of 30 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.8 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 5th in the league.

The Indianapolis Colts had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the San Diego Chargers by 35 points to 20. The Colts had then played the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Playoffs who they had beat 10 - 7.

During regular season the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts had not played against each other but the Steelers definitely had the better offense and could be fancied to win the Conference Championship.

In the 1995 AFC Championship between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts it was the Steelers who won a close game by 20 - 16.

Super Bowl XXX between the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers looked to be a decent enough game. They had not met in regular season but both had been in the top handful of teams in offense. They had both been solid enough in defense too. However, although both were good teams it was the Dallas Cowboys who actually ranked the higher of the two in both offense and defense and the Cowboys could be considered a worthy favorite.

In the first quarter of Super Bowl XXX it was the Dallas Cowboys who started well and they opened up a 10 point lead following a field goal from Chris Boniol, a touchdown by Jay Novacek and a successful kick by Chris Boniol. The Cowboys led 20 - 7.

Finally, in the fourth quarter the Pittsburgh Steelers woke themselves up a bit and following an early field goal by Norm Johnson they did manage to score from a touchdown by Bam Morris and a kick by Norm Johnson. The Steelers had reduced the gap to 20 - 17.

The Cowboys were not finished though and with 3 minutes and 43 seconds to go they came back again with another touchdown from Emmitt Smith plus a successful kick by Chris Boniol.

The Dalls Cowboys won Super Bowl XXX by 27 - 17.

Larry Brown the Dallas Cowboys cornerback was named Super Bowl XXX after his two interceptions led to 14 second-half points for the Cowboys.

Note
The Dallas Cowboys playoff averages were 31.7 points scored per game (27.2 regular season) and an average of 18.3 points conceded per game (18.2 regular season).

The Pittsburgh Steelers playoff averages were 25.7 points scored per game (25.4 regular season) and an average of 21.3 points conceded per game (20.4 regular season).

In Conclusion
Super Bowl XXX ended up quite a tight contest and with just under 4 minutes remaining the game could have gone either way. However, I do believe the right team won and that there could be no hard luck stories.

The Dallas Cowboys were the 2nd team to win five Super Bowl′s.

Team

1

2

3

4

OT / Overtime

T / Total

Dallas Cowboys (NFC)

10

3

7

7

-

27

Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC)

0

7

0

10

-

17

Roger Staubach Super Bowl VI MVP

Roger Staubach Dallas Cowboys

Roger Staubach joined the Dallas Cowboys after having served in the United States Navy, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Staubach became better know as "Roger The Dodger" during his 11 years as an NFL player when he was selected to six Pro Bowls (1971, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979) and was named the Professional American Football Player of the Year in 1971. The 49ers point scoring average had been 31.6 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 18.5 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 6th in the league.

The San Francisco 49ers postseason games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Chicago Bears who had finished 2nd in the 1994 NFC Central Division coached by Dave Wannstedt with a regular season record of 9-7-0. The Bears point scoring average had been 16.9 points per game which made their offense 24th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.2 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 10th in the league.

The Chicago Bears had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Minnesota Vikings by 35 points to 18.

In regular season the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears had not played against each other but that made no odds as the Bears had no chance against the 49ers.

The 1994 NFC Divisional Playoff tie between the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears was won by the 49ers very easily by 44 points to 15.

The San Francisco 49ers were now through to the NFC Championship Game where their opponents were the defending Super Bowl Champs the Dallas Cowboys who had finished 1st in the 1994 NFC East Division coached by Barry Switzer with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Cowboys point scoring average had been 25.9 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.5 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 3rd in the league.

In regular season the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys had played against each other once when the 49ers who′d had home field advantage had won by 21 - 14.

In the Conference Championship it was the San Francisco 49ers, again playing with home field advantage, who confirmed their superiority over the Dallas Cowboys to win by 38 - 28.

The San Francisco 49ers opponents in Super Bowl XXIX were the San Diego Chargers who had finished 1st in the 1994 AFC West Division coached by Bobby Ross with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Chargers point scoring average had been 23.8 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 19.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 9th in the league.

The San Diego Chargers playoff season games began with the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Miami Dolphins who had finished 1st in the 1994 AFC East Division coached by Don Shula with a regular season record of 10-6-0. The Dolphins point scoring average had been 24.3 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 20.4 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 17th in the league.

The Miami Dolphins had reached the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in their AFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the Kansas City Chiefs by 27 points to 17.

In regular season the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins had not played against each other but looking at their average figures for points scored and conceded there was not a great deal between them with slight preference for the Chargers who had the better defense.

As average figures had suggested prior to the game, there proved to be not much between the Chargers and the Dolphins. After a very close fought game the San Diego Chargers won by 22 points to 21.

The San Diego Chargers next playoff game was in the AFC Championship and their opponents were the Pittsburgh Steelers who had finished 1st in the 1994 AFC Central Division coached by Bill Cowher with a regular season record of 12-4-0. The Steelers point scoring average had been 19.8 points per game which made their offense 16th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 14.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league.

During regular season the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers had played against each other once when it had been the Chargers who had won a very close game by 37 - 34.

The Steelers had a very good defense but were not prolific point scorers. Whilst taking both sets of average figures for offense and defense into account then the Chargers would have to be given the vote for victory in the Conference Championship. In addition the Chargers had the confidence boosting regular season victory to their name.

In the 1994 AFC Championship it was the San Diego Chargers who once again edged a very close game to win by 17 - 13.

Super Bowl XXIX between the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers had a clear favorite and they were the 49ers who had the top offense in the league and who on average had scored nearly 8 points per game more than the Chargers all season. Added to that the 49ers had the better defensive record.

In regular season the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers had played against each other once when it was the 49ers who had easily won by 38 - 15.

Going by the form book no case could be made for the Chargers and a clear cut victory for the 49ers looked the safest bet!

In the first quarter of Super Bowl XXIX it was the San Francisco 49ers who started the quicker with one touchdown apiece from Jerry Rice and Ricky Watters and two successful kicks at goal by Doug Brien. Although the Chargers hit back with a Natrone Means touchdown and a John Carney kick. At the end of the first it was the 49ers who led by 14 points to 7.

The second quarter saw practically the same pattern as the first. The 49ers pushing forward at every opportunity to score two touchdowns again, one by William Floyd and the other from Ricky Watters along with two successful kicks at goal by Doug Brien.

The Chargers did manage a second quarter field goal by John Carney but by half-time there was already a big gap appearing between the two teams scores. The 49ers now led by 28 - 10.

In the third quarter and obviously wanting more of the same, it was the 49ers with two more touchdowns, one from Ricky Watters and the other from Jerry Rice along with two more successful kicks at goal by Doug Brien.

However, the Chargers did score a touchdown by Andre Coleman from a kick-off return but they were losing ground fast and the 49ers were now 42 - 18 in front.

Into the fourth and the 49ers scored again with a Jerry Rice touchdown and a kick by Doug Brien but the Chargers did at least finish on a good note scoring a Tony Martin touchdown.

Super Bowl XXIX was won by the San Francisco 49ers 49 - 26.

The 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowl′s.

Steve Young the San Francisco 49ers Quarterback was named Super Bowl XXIX Most Valuable Player after he completed 24 of 36 passes for 325 yards. Six of those passes went for touchdowns.

Note
The San Francisco 49ers playoff averages were 43.7 points scored per game (31.6 regular season) and an average of 23 points conceded per game (18.5 regular season).

The San Diego Chargers playoff averages were 21.7 points scored per game (23.8 regular season) and an average of 27.7 points conceded per game (19.1 regular season).

In Conclusion
As the 49ers point sco
