Super Bowl XXVII

1992 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Champions Healy Plaque

Super Bowl XXVII played on January 31, 1993, was won by the Champions of the NFC the Dallas Cowboys who defeated the AFC Champions the Buffalo Bills at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California.

The Dallas Cowboys had finished 1st in the 1992 NFC East Division coached by Jimmy Johnson with a regular season record of 13-3-0. The Cowboys point scoring average had been 25.6 points per game which made their offense 2nd best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.2 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 5th in the league.

The Dallas Cowboys postseason games began with the NFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Philadelphia Eagles who had finished 2nd in the 1992 NFC East Division coached by Rich Kotite with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Eagles point scoring average had been 22.1 points per game which made their offense 5th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 15.3 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 6th in the league.

The Philadelphia Eagles had got through to the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in the NFC Wild Card Game they had beaten the New Orleans Saints by 36 points to 20.

The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles had played against each other twice in regular season when both had won whilst playing at home.

The Philadelphia Eagles were a good side although regular season division finishing positions, season win records, averages for points scored and conceded all pointed to a victory for the Cowboys. In addition the Cowboys were to have home field advantage for this NFC Divisional Playoff.

The Dallas Cowboys won this game in convincing fashion by 34 points to 10.

Next playoff game for the Dallas Cowboys was the NFC Championship Game and their opponents were the San Francisco 49ers who had finished 1st in the 1992 NFC West Division coached by George Seifert with a regular season record of 14-2-0. The 49ers point scoring average had been 26.9 points per game which made their offense 1st best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 14.8 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 3rd in the league.

In regular season the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers had not played against each other but the 49ers were a good side and a very tough test for the Cowboys.

However, the Dallas Cowboys made no mistake and beat the San Francisco 49ers comfortably by 30 - 20 to win the 1992 National Football Conference Championship Game.

The Dallas Cowboys opponents in Super Bowl XXVII were the Buffalo Bills who had finished 1st in the 1992 AFC East Division coached by Marv Levy Marv Levy Photograph with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Bills point scoring average had been 23.8 points per game which made their offense 3rd best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.7 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 14th in the league.

The Buffalo Bills had finished regular season with an inferior record to the Miami Dolphins who were also 11-5-0 in the AFC East Division. The Bills got through to the playoffs as a Wild Card team and in the AFC Wild Card Game had beaten the Houston Oilers by 41 points to 38.

The Buffalo Bills next postseason game was in the AFC Divisional Playoffs in which their opponents were the Pittsburgh Steelers who had finished 1st in the 1992 AFC Central Division coached by Bill Cowher with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Steelers point scoring average had been 18.7 points per game which made their offense 15th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 14.1 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 2nd in the league.

During regular season the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers had played against each other once when the Bills strong offense had picked holes in the Steelers defense to win by 28 points to 20.

In the AFC Divisional Playoffs the Buffalo Bills once again pulled the Steelers normally sound defense apart to win 24 - 3.

The Buffalo Bills next playoff game was in the AFC Championship and their opponents were the Miami Dolphins who had finished 1st in the 1992 AFC East Division coached by Don Shula with a regular season record of 11-5-0. The Dolphins point scoring average had been 21.2 points per game which made their offense 8th best of 28 in the NFL and they had a points allowed average of 17.6 points conceded per game which ranked their defense 11th in the league. The two teams were quite closely matched on their averages with a marginal preference for the Bills.

During regular season the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins had played against each other twice when both teams had strangely enough lost their home fixture but won the away one.

In the 1992 AFC Championship the Miami Dolphins had home field advantage but would the local fans count as the "extra man"?

The home stadium jinx once again come into play and it was the away team the Buffalo Bills who won quite easily by 29 points to 10.

Super Bowl XXVII did not look to be that close a match with the Dallas Cowboys some way ahead on regular season achievement. They had won their two earlier playoff games in good style against strong teams and were odds-on favorites.

However, in the first quarter of Super Bowl XXVII it was the Buffalo Bills who got off to the quicker start when scoring with a Thurman Thomas touchdown and Steve Christie kick.

The Dallas Cowboys came back with two touchdowns of their own from Jay Novacek and Jimmie Jones plus two kicks from Lin Elliott.

By the end of the first quarter it was the Dallas Cowboys who were in control and they had a 14 - 7 lead.

In the second quarter with 3 minutes 24 seconds left on the clock it was the Buffalo Bills who scored with a Steve Christie field goal but that only spurred the Cowboys into action and before the end of this session of the game they had scored a further two touchdowns from Michael Irvin and two kicks from Lin Elliott.

The Cowboys had a 28 - 10 half-time lead.

The third quarter saw the Dallas Cowboys extend their lead to 31 - 10 following a Lin Elliott field goal.

However, right at the very end of the third it was the Buffalo Bills who got a Don Beebe touchdown along with a Steve Christie kick and the score was now 31 - 17.

In the fourth quarter the Cowboys asserted their superiority and made sure of victory with three touchdowns from Alvin Harper, Emmitt Smith and Ken Norton and three kicks from Lin Elliott.

The Bufflo Bills could give no more and Super Bowl XXVII was won by the Dallas Cowboys 52 - 17.

Troy Aikman the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback was voted Super Bowl XXVII MVP after he completed 22 out of 30 passes for 273 yards with 4 TDs.

Note
The Dallas Cowboys playoff averages were 35.3 points scored per game (25.6 regular season) and an average of 15.7 points conceded per game (15.2 regular season).

The Buffalo Bills playoff averages over 4 games were 27.8 points scored per game (23.8 regular season) and an average of 25.8 points conceded per game (17.7 regular season).

In Conclusion
The Dallas Cowboys beat very good teams in both the NFC Divisional Playoffs and the NFC Championship. They then ran the Buffalo Bills ragged and were worthy winners.

The Buffalo Bills for the third year running were just not good enough.

It is a pity in some ways that Super Bowl pits the winner of the AFC Championship against the winner of the NFC Championship as it leads the "Joe Bloggs" type football observer to believe that the runner-up in Super Bowl is the second best team in the NFL, which quite clearly at times they are not!
