Super Bowl VI

1971 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Champions Healy Plaque

Super Bowl VI played on January 16 1972, was won by the Champions of the NFC the Dallas Cowboys who defeated the AFC Champions the Miami Dolphins at Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Cowboys coached by Tom Landry Tom Landry Lithograph had won the 1971 NFC East Division with a regular season record of 11-3-0. They were a very free scoring unit averaging 29 points a game, the best scoring average in the League that season but were not so good in defense, conceding on average 15.9 points per game which was only seventh best in the NFL but I suppose their motto at that time could have been something like "If the opponents score - we score more!"

Dallas Cowboys 1971 playoff games started with a 20 - 12 Christmas Day defeat of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. The Cowboys then defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship by 14 points to 3.

The Miami Dolphins coached by Don Shula Don Shula Lithograph were the winners of the 1971 AFC East Division after posting a regular season record of 10-3-1. The Dolphins possibly had the edge on regular season achievement. Although not being the attacking force (only fourth in the league with an average of 22.5 points scored per game) of the Cowboys their defense had a better record with only 12.4 points on average conceded per game, which was the third best defense throughout regular season.

However, the Miami Dolphins defense had a roller coaster time of it in the playoffs. In the AFC Divisional Playoff they narrowly beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27 - 24 in what was the longest game in NFL history. The Dolphins had conceded more points only once in the whole of the regular season. Was it just an off day for the defense?

Next time out in the AFC Championship Game the Dolphins appeared to be back on song when dishing out a football lesson to the Baltimore Colts beating them 21 - 0.

Super Bowl VI saw the Dallas Cowboys maintain their consistent playoff form of the 1971 NFL Season whilst the "Jekyll & Hyde" Miami Dolphins defense turned up again. Not even the Dolphins offense could save the day.

The Cowboys led 10 - 3 at half time and by the end of the game had scored consistently throughout, notching another fourteen points without reply and won as they liked 24 - 3. It was the first Super Bowl in history where the opposition were prevented from scoring a touchdown.

Roger Staubach Roger Staubach Lithograph the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback was voted the game′s Most Valuable Player after completing 12 of 19 passes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Note
Yet again the Dallas Cowboys showed that postseason games employ a different strategy to those in regular season, with emphasis more on not wanting to lose rather than big winning margins and defenses become tighter. Over the course of the three playoff games their average points scored and conceded both dropped from regular season, with averages being recorded of 19.3 scored (29 regular) and only 6 points on average conceded (15.9 regular).

In contrast, the Dolphins averages in the playoffs proved they did not score so effectively, averaging 17 points scored per game (22.5 regular season) but worst of all defense went "pear shaped" averaging 16 points conceded per game (12.5 regular season).

A team wins nothing if they are leaking points in defense!
