Super Bowl IV

"The Fourth AFL-NFL World Championship Game"

Super Bowl IV played on January 11 1970, was won by the Kansas City Chiefs who gave the AFL their second victory in a Super Bowl when beating the Minnesota Vikings at Tulane Stadium, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Kansas City Chiefs coached by Hank Stram, looked on paper to be up against the odds as their opponents the Minnesota Vikings coached by Bud Grant Bud Grant Lithograph had won the NFL Western Conference Central Division in impressive fashion 12-2-0. The Vikings had looked the better attacking force throughout regular season (especially at home) scoring freely averaging 27.1 points per game and as a consequence of getting opponents on the back foot the Vikings defensive record was equally impressive, on average conceding only 9.5 points per game. They had then won the NFL Western Conference Divisional Playoff beating the Los Angeles Rams 23 - 20 before powering to a 27 - 7 victory over the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship Game.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs who had finished second in the 1969 AFL West Division with a regular season record of 11-3-0 probably never showed their best form until the AFL playoffs.

The 1969 AFL Playoffs were played in an expanded format. Four teams faced each other in a Divisional Playoff when the two AFL Division′s winners faced the two Division runners-up ie the winner of the AFL East Division faced the second placed team in the AFL West Division and vice-versa.

After beating the New York Jets 13 - 6 in the AFL Divisional Playoff, the Kansas City Chiefs went through to the AFL Championship Game where they faced the Oakland Raiders.

The Kansas City Chiefs had lost twice in regular season to AFL West Division winners the Oakland Raiders but in the AFL Championship Game it was a different story with the Chiefs beating the Raiders 17 - 7.

Throughout the playoff season the Chiefs defense hardly gave anything away and only conceded a total of twenty points in three postseason games and they were certainly almost water tight on the day of Super Bowl IV, nevertheless it was the points scored that won the game that day and when the Chiefs raced into a 16 - 0 half time lead, driven forward by the superb quarterback skills of Len Dawson Len Dawson Lithograph, who completed twelve of seventeen passes, the result never looked to be in much doubt. Even when in the third quarter the Vikings managed to score seven points then the Chiefs matched it scoring seven themselves and after shutting out the Vikings in the fourth the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl IV by 23 points to 7.
