Alexandra Park Racecourse
Alexandra Park Racecourse was located at Wood Green, North London in the grounds of Alexandra Palace.
It was one of the most peculiarly shaped courses in Britain and was affectionately known as "The Frying Pan".
The looped part of the course came off a single straight and all races (except those over five furlongs) were started near the winning post with horses running away from the stands (the opposite way to which they would be finishing).
To add to it′s character the start for five furlong races could not actually be seen from the stands.
After an initial left handed turn when running away from the stands races then proceeded in a clockwise (right-handed) direction around the loop.
The finishing straight was nearly four furlongs in length.
High numbers were best in sprints.
Race distances
5 furlongs
1 mile 160 yards
1 mile 5 furlongs and a few yards
The last meeting at Alexandra Park was on 8th September 1970
