The site at Fair Grounds has staged Thoroughbred racing since 1853. The first racetrack was called Union Course with the name changing to Fair Grounds in the 1860's. Notable races are Louisiana Champions Day (for state bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses) and Louisiana Derby (G2).
