This is the Sir Stanley Matthews Souvenir Book and Farewell Match Programme for the game between Stanley Matthews XI and the International XI which was played on Wednesday April 28th 1965 at the Victoria Ground Stoke-on-Trent.

It seems like Sir Stan’s farewell was quite a night out for the people from the Potteries as the live entertainment other than football consisted of The Dagenham Girl Pipers, The Band of the North Staffordshire Army Cadet Regiment T.A., plus a host of stars of stage, screen and television from the Water Rats organisation which was led by Charlie Chester and Tommy Trinder. These stars also provided cabaret at the Farewell Ball after the game.

In addition to the main match of the evening there was also a 20 minute each way knockabout game between two teams of Post War Favourites consisting of a Harry Johnston XI and a Wally Barnes XI.

Johnston had been the captain of Blackpool when they won the 1953 FA Cup and Wally Barnes an FA Cup winner with Arsenal in 1950.
